There’s lots of reasons to hire a wedding planner… but not all wedding planners are created equal.

Whether you find the entire process overwhelming or time consuming or you’d just like the help of an expert, wedding planners can save you stress, time, and can also save you money.

If you’re not sure if you need a wedding planner full stop, or you’re not sure that the one you’re considering is right for you, here are some questions you should ask yourself first.

1.  Does your venue provide a coordinator?

Lots of wedding venues will provide you a coordinator to help run your day. What the coordinator does will vary from venue to venue to be clear about what they will do on the day. Will they help set up the room? Will they ensure you adhere to the timeline and communicate and facilitate with your vendors? Or do they only worry about the venue’s side of things, like organising the meals and cake cutting? Getting an idea of what help the venue will provide on the day can help you determine if you need more help or not.

2. How much time do you have to plan your wedding?

Did you know that the average wedding takes 250 hours to plan? Lots of brides look forward to planning their weddings and will happily spend all their free time for 18 months organising their big day.  And for some brides, they have absolutely no free time at all to dedicate to planning their wedding, no matter how much they’d like to. Others will fall somewhere in between.  If you are on a time crunch a planner can definitely save you a buttload of stress.

3. What help do you need exactly?

There are lots of things wedding planners can do for you. They can help you find vendors, organise contracts, set out your timeline, give styling advice, help you with etiquette and run logistics on the day (from setting up to packing up and everything in between). Some wedding planners offer packages with everything included, some will help you with some aspects only. If you don’t think you can organise everything yourself then you might need help.

4. Can you afford it?

How much you pay a wedding planner will depend on many factors. Some only take on weddings that have an extremely large budget. Some have different packages with different services included. Be clear about what you want and get a quote for what they will provide. At the same time, hiring a planner could save you money when it comes to hiring your other vendors. Many planners have vendors they work with regularly and may be able to pass on savings to you.
