Today is an historic day – it’s the first official day where same sex couples can get married in Australia!

After a long, long wait, marriage equality is finally the new normal in Australia.

Many same sex couples around the country chose to mark the occasion by tying the knot on the stroke of midnight.

Almost 62 per cent of voters said yes to marriage equality in the same-sex marriage postal survey last year, and the government made changes to the marriage act to redefine marriage from being the union of a “man and a woman” to simply “two people”.

While today is the first day weddings can take place, a few couples managed to receive permission for special circumstance to hold legal weddings before today.

Love is great and LOVE conquers all! ⠀ ⠀ Last night marked a historic turning point for Australia and we couldn’t be more thrilled. A spectacular night celebrating the love of two of the most genuine individuals, Luke and Craig shared their vows in front of loved ones at midnight and there was not a dry eye in the room! ⠀ ⠀ Photo courtesy of: Daily Mail – Getty Images ⠀ ⠀ Venue: @Summergroveestate⠀ Photography: @Jadoreweddingfilms⠀ Film: @Jadoreweddingfilms⠀ Styling: @Beautifulweddingsaustralia⠀ Celebrant: @Sarahmayalexander_celebrant⠀ Planning: @tm_event_planning Live Music: @Bennyhannamusic⠀ Hair & Make Up: @Bella_brides⠀ Florist: @Jacquimdesign⠀ Fireworks: @Aerialpyro⠀ Boys Accessories: @Woodandbeau⠀ Taco Catering: @Poptaco⠀ Food Platters: @Yourplattermatters⠀ Pizza: @Theitalianjobkirra⠀ Cake: @twolittlebakers⠀ Rings: @Michaelhill⠀ Love Letters: @Eventletters⠀ Stationary: @Invitationdesignsbyeliza⠀ Photo Booth: @insta.kombi
