When it comes to popping the question in Australia in 2019, we’re still by and large a traditional bunch. According to the results of Australia’s Biggest Engagement Ring Survey by Brisbane jewellers Diamondport, 85 per cent of men are the ones who ask the question.
Ten per cent of women who responded to the survey said that they did the asking… but in five per cent of cases the proposal was a mutual decision.
Only 20 per cent of engagement rings are bought after the proposal, and in many cases the bride-to-be knows what the ring looks like in advance before the question is even asked.
The cost of an engagement ring is also borne by both members of the couple in 20 per cent of cases, even when the other partner has proposed.
